Its time for Monday Paint Club 2024! Join me as we explore new methods to push your painting to the next level. We will start with a demo and have some morning exercises to loosen up!! These small classes allow me to give close attention to each painter. Breaking old habits and learning to "SEE" in a fresh new way.

 Focus For Session 1-composition, values and color harmony. Bring your ipad or print out images that you have been wanting to paint . 

 Focus for Session 2 - Plein Air and getting the essentials in your plein air sketch.

 Bring your lunch and start your week out creatively!!!

Day Color Boot Camp

We will start out the first day doing still life study out of
doors which will prepare us to tackle the landscape. Second day
we will be on location painting the landscape. I will be teaching the
structure of the landscape—what is important to include as
well as what to leave out. On the last day we
studies of the figure (in Hensche/Hawthorne “mudhead”tradition). We will concentrate on the development of strong starts, and focus on expressing the big masses, light key and aerial perspective with color. I will be doing demos throughout the workshop. You will do a color study before lunch, followed by one or two color studies in the afternoon. You are encouraged to either bring original artwork or photos and talk to me about your vision as an artist. I look forward to working with each of you!

• sturdy, portable, plein-air easel or
 pochade setup (able to support your mixing surface—please,no paper palettes) • painting knives (one as shown)
• a few brushes (optional)
• paper towels (Viva® recommended) • sun hat or visor, & sunscreen lotion • light blue, easily eraseable, pastel

Loosen Up Your Painting

Description: 

This workshop is for all skill levels from beginner to advanced. Penix will cover topics such as the power of warms and cools, complementaries, harmony, edges, shape-quality, variety, simplifying, loosening brushwork,  elements of design, elements of light and shadow, the power of suggestion and seeing in terms of mass and shape relationships. There will be a strong emphasis on making your paintings more three-dimensional. Students will use oils (other mediums are welcome) to paint from photos. They will have a choice of dozens of photographs consisting of boats, cityscapes, figures, birds, hanging fruit and fish. Students will also have the option to paint from their own photos if they choose.

The first half of the day Penix will paint from a photo to demonstrate his process from start to finish. The second half of the day the students will paint with Penix's guidance. Students are also welcome to bring a painting previously painted for Penix to critique.

The Beyond the Basics series is designed to explore, more in depth, some specific aspects of painting; aspects that are beyond a painter’s general knowledge. In this class we will focus on “Selection”…what to paint, how to organize your subject matter on the canvas, and how to select the color scheme. A color booklet of notes and four weeks of online guidance will be provided as a follow up to class.

DRAWING AS FOUNDATION FOR PAINTING

JULY 10 - 12, 2024 / $500 / ON TRACK STUDIOS/ FRANKLIN, TN

3 Days ~ Don’t let your struggles with your drawing skills hold you back from successful paintings.  Face your fears head on and come prepared to learn practical approaches for any subject matter. Everyone learns differently, so this topic will be approached from many angles.  Drawing is a most important skill for any artist. Appropriate for all levels.

LEARNING TO PAINT THE HEAD

OCT 9-11, 2024 / $590 / ON TRACK STUDIOS/ FRANKLIN, TN

The class is designed as a skill-building workshop.  We will take a deep dive into drawing, proportions, value, edges, and likeness.  Class exercises will train you for painting better portraits. A color booklet of notes and four weeks online guidance will be provided as a folow up to the class in order to help you with that portrait you have been wanting to do.

TAKING YOUR WORK TO THE NEXT LEVEL

NOVEMBER 6-8, 2024 /  $600 /  ON TRACK STUDIOS  / FRANKLIN, TN

Artists who are interested in improving their work often get stalled in their progress and just need a kick-start to get back on the path for excellence. This workshop is a chance to take a good honest look at your current work and consider what exactly needs improvement. The class will be divided Into three parts: identification of the one area that most needs improvement, individualized exercises to address the problem, studio painting to put new ideas in to practice. Four weeks of online mentoring is included as a follow up to the class

Painting Lyrical Water

3-Day Studio Workshop for Oil and Pastel with Barbara Jaenicke

Sept. 13 – 15, 2024

On Track Studios, Franklin, TN

Learn to paint exuberant, lively water so that the viewer can feel the light and hear the sounds! Featuring moving water as the primary subject matter for this workshop, Barbara will present and demonstrate her approach to landscape painting, which can also apply to any landscape subject. Skills covered will include composition (especially pertaining to showcasing water in a painting), editing, value structure, color temperature, chroma, and edges. Emphasis will be on capturing brilliant light effects for moving water subjects such as waterfalls and rapids. 

Students can paint in either oil or pastel, or alternate between both. Barbara will demonstrate both. Demonstrations will be in the morning, and students will paint in the afternoon with plenty of individual instruction at the easel. This workshop is open to all levels, although artists with at least some basic landscape painting experience and familiarity with their supplies will benefit most.
